I wrote and performed a London folktale in verse which incorporated some of the Woodcraft Folk’s core aims: equality, co-operation and respect for the environment. The content was designed specifically for these 6-9 year-olds. The story was enacted with passion and the children remained engaged throughout and discussed the themes of the tale in depth afterwards.
‘You lazy fools’ the leader cried. You’ve not looked hard enough.
Go take another tribe’s fish by force. And if they don’t like it – TOUGH!’
The old women watched with fear in her heart as the boats were laden with knifes.
And though she was scared of the tribal leader she couldn’t let him take any lives.
